Book Review:................ Grief Denied by Pauline Laurent
This book was written by the widow of Howard E Querry Jr. who was a graduate from the very first NCOC Class, 1-67. Howard was KIA on May 10, 1968. The story describes what she went through as a young bride/wife/mother to be/widow, and the inability to put a closure to a tragic event.
In writing this book, Pauline is attempting to finally come to terms with her loss and describes how she also suffered from a different type of PTSD. At the funeral she was a brave war widow, seven months pregant with their daughter. Her catharsis began when she and her daughter began planning her daughters wedding. Twenty five-plus years of suppressed emotions began to seep through the cracks of her soul. She wasn't young anymore and these emotions surfaced to be dealt with "NOW".
As a former Grunt, this book allowed me to see the other side of the story about Vietnam; the side about the families and their loss.
